THE

NUMNUM
MUSEUM

ART THAT COUNTS

OWN A NUMBER

The numnums are your chance to own a number. They span the integers 0 - 9999. Some, like primes, are especially rare.

JOIN THE MUSEUM

Your numnum is your membership pass to The Numnum Museum. By owning a numnum, you’re a patron of the arts and help shape the future of the Museum.

COLLECT NEW ART

Our in-house and commissioned artists will create new digital prints customized to your numnum. This includes brand new works, as well as limited edition prints derived from the collection.

THE MUSEUM

COLLECTION

The Numnum Museum seeks to grow the audience for new forms of digital art. The Museum will collect and commission works but not sell them, and will use them to experiment with what it means to be a museum in the metaverse.

The founders have sponsored The Museum's initial acquisitions. More than 50% of auction proceeds will be dedicated to building The Museum's collection.

THE MUSEUM

The Museum is dedicated to fostering an appreciation of digital art and evolving what it means to be a museum in the metaverse.

We curate a collection of exceptional NFTs and digital works. Numnum holders are its patrons, members of a new museum for the digital age.

YOUR MEMBERSHIP

Members will receive custom-made art based on their numnum, derived from The Museum’s collection or from unique works commissioned for our community.

The Museum’s first custom art is a derivative of our “prisoner ape” Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT, made with your numnum.

In addition to receiving original art, members also give input into future acquisitions and curatorial direction of The Museum.

GET YOUR

NUMNUM

THE 0x∞ AUCTION

The Numnum Museum isn't your typical NFT and will use a novel approach to raising funds. We call it the infinite auction:

  • Numnums 2 to 9999 will be available to mint for free (max 3 per wallet).
  • A numnum can always be purchased! A buyer can yoink a numnum for 3.14% more than its previous purchase price (and a freely minted numnum can be yoinked for .0314 ETH).
  • After a sale, the previous holder is refunded their purchase price, and the new sale proceeds go to The Museum.

Check out the FAQ to learn more about how the infinite auction addresses some of the common issues with NFTs, and an example of how it works.

MULTIPLICATION

What about numbers above 9,999? Unclaimed numbers from zero to (nearly) infinity will be mintable by multiplying any two existing numnums together.

Holders of the numnums used as mulitiplication factors will earn rewards points, redeemable for special art programs and additional numnums. This is where owning a rare prime will be particularly enjoyable.

OUR GOALS

A COLLECTION

The Museum seeks to grow the audience for new forms of digital art by collecting and curating pieces from across the metaverse. The Museum will collect works but not sell them, and will use them to experiment with and evolve what it means to be a museum in the metaverse.

The Museum intends to collect digital works of all kinds, across all platforms, from a diverse set of creators.

A DIGITALLY NATIVE ART MUSEUM

In the physical world, art museums are a largely one-way experience. You visit, admire the art, and leave (perhaps with a print from the gift shop). Many collections and museums that are now being built in the metaverse replicate this experience. These digital galleries and collections are skeuomorphic with existing physical museums: you enter a digital space, look at the art, and leave.

But we now live in a world of new frontiers: generative art, digital scarcity, and distributed ownership rights. What it means to make art in this new world has changed -- shouldn’t our idea of what a museum is change, too?

Our goal is to experiment with and evolve what it means to be a museum in the metaverse. Members and visitors should be able to go beyond just admiring the art we hold. What if they can take a piece of it home with them? What if they can curate their own exhibits across our collection? What does a truly crypto-native, digital-first art museum look like? We’re excited to discover this together.

A PLATFORM TO DISCOVER AND PROMOTE ARTISTS

The Museum will also focus on building relationships with artists in order to support and promote their work. There is a growing abundance of new artists creating work across many different platforms, but discovery remains a difficult problem. Through the collection, the Museum also hopes to become a means to discover and promote artists from around the globe.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

QUESTIONS

What’s a Numnum?

Numnums are NFTs representing the first 9999 integers.

They also grant membership in The Numnum Museum, and are the blueprint to custom art experiences based on The Museum's art collection.

So if I hold a numnum, I’ll have access to custom art based on works like BAYC?

Yes -- The Numnum Museum doesn’t just collect art, we also create it. Members will get access to artwork customized to their numnum based on works in The Museum's collection.

Why the infinite auction model?

The infinite auction challenges the traditional concept of art ownership -- you may own a piece forever, or for an hour.

A free mint supports The Museum’s goal of making digital art accessible to everyone. Traditional mints rely on hype that may last only a few days, while the infinite auction enables long-term building. The Museum can continue to fund acquisitions and commissions with proceeds raised over time as the Museum grows and values go up.

We also hope that removing the obvious profit motive from ownership will mean we can build a community that genuinely loves the art they hold and is invested in the work of the Museum. “Community” among NFTs has become synonymous with hype and short-term flipping. We think rewarding members with new artwork is more consistent with our mission and also more compelling.

Can you give an example of how the auction will work?

Sure, here's a example:

Owner 1 mints numnum 1234 for free. While they own it, the Museum releases a new custom art series for members, which they also mint as a companion to their numnum.

Owner 2 yoinks the numnum for Ξ0.0314 from Owner 1, the minimum amount they can pay over the previous purchase price, in this case free. Owner 1 keeps their companion art.

Owner 3 also loves numnum 1234 and hopes to hold it for awhile, so yoinks it for Ξ0.5. Owner 2 is refunded their Ξ0.0314 purchase (but not gas). The remaining proceeds from the sale go to the Museum.

What can I do with the custom art I get from the museum?

Mostly whatever you want! You own any custom art -- specific rights will depend on the art and artist, but we will grant you all the rights we have.

What’s The Numnum Museum?

The Numnum Museum is a digital museum dedicated to fostering understanding & appreciation of digital art in both its members and the general public. Our mission is to grow the audience for digital art, discover & promote digital artists and redefine the role of art museums in a digital world.

The Museum collects exceptional pieces of digital art and funds the creation of new works that advance the field.

Will The Museum sell art from its collection?

No. The Museum's collection is permanent. Art placed in the collection will not be made available for sale.

Are you really selling numbers?

Don't be ridiculous. We are selling numnums.

Are some numnums special?

Yes. Just like the integers, some numnums are perfect, others are prime. Not every numnum is rare, but every numnum counts.

I'm an artist, how can I work with you?

We’d love to hear from you! Please reach out to @thenumnums on Twitter.
